GETTING AROUND CLUNES

The historic township of Clunes (Victoria's first gold mining town) is only 5 minute drive from our Beckworth Retreat accommodation and it is highly recommended to spend some hours browsing through the Booktown stores or just sitting having a coffee in the historic "film set" main street.

Clunes is only 90 minutes from Melbourne (just 20 minutes north of Ballarat so easy access from the A8 – Adelaide to Melbourne freeway).

Clunes is a picturesque and historic town made famous from the gold rush days and is host to the International Annual Booktown Festival in May.

It is a great place to explore and find little treasures.

Beckworth Retreat is just 6km from town where there are cafes, bookshops, antiquities and the local country pub.

Many Victorian Secrets (Pyrenees, Goldfields, Mineral Spas) are all a short drive away.

Go back in history, to when gold was first discovered in Ballarat in 1841. Go shopping 1850's style, pan for gold and experience the old time magic.

Gold & Relics - Gold Propecting Adventures

Embark on a half or full day gold prospecting adventure, leaving from Creswick, Victoria. Pan for gold as well as use the latest in metal detectors.

Eastern Peake Vineyard & Winery

Eastern Peake is known as one of the leaders when it comes to boutique wines.

Mt. Coghill Vineyard

Mt Coghill Vineyard was established in 1993 with cold climate vines including chardonnay and pinot poir. Pizza Sundays, Wine Tastings and special events need to be booked.

Creswick Woollen Mill

The Creswick Woollen Mills tourism experience “A Very Fine Yarn” showcases the journey of fibre; all the way from its source on the alpaca, through the manufacturing process and how it ends up on the shop shelf.

The annual Clunes Booktown Festival is happening on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 March 2025. Join the most amazing wholetown bookshop experience in Australia.

Join the Clunes Booktown for free monthly author talks from 2pm on the 3rd Sunday of each month in The Warehouse, Clunes.

Clunes Farmers' Market

Enjoy locally grown produce at the Clunes Farmers' Market, held on the second Sunday of every month.

Located in the main street, 9am - 1pm

Creswick Market

Located in the picturesque and historic township of Creswick, just 20 minutes to either Ballarat or Daylesford.

The Creswick Market is open 9am till 1pm, on the third Saturday of every month. The market is a great day out for the whole family – Bring the kids and your four-footed friends – you’re all welcome.

Talbot Farmers' Market

On the third Sunday of every month the tiny town of Talbot comes alive as thousands of visitors enjoy the vibrant village atmosphere of the Talbot Farmers Market.

Explore the stall lined streets displaying an impressive range of local produce and much more. In true country farmers’ market style you will also see chickens, stockfeed, cut flowers, plants and seedlings.

Amazing Mill Markets

Open 7 days (except Christmas) The Ballarat Amazing Mill Markets is the place to explore for your vintage clothing and furniture, antiques, memorabila and so much more.

The coffee is good, the meals are great and the company even better - we love to go into Clunes at any time of the day. And if you want more Creswick, Maryborough, Talbot, Waubra and Learmonth are all just another 10-15 minutes away in various directions.
